A full-circle recovery story for Hera

It’s always uplifting to share good news, especially when it shows what coordinated veterinary care can achieve. Hera, a beautiful German Shepherd, recently reminded us how quickly the unexpected can happen, and how powerful a full-team approach can be for recovery.

A sudden injury

While chasing a mouse, Hera suddenly became lame on her hind leg. Her family acted quickly and rushed her to our emergency service. On examination, our ER vet found a gash on her leg, but initial radiographs showed no fractures or obvious bone injury.

From emergency to surgery

Because her lameness didn’t quite fit the picture, the surgical team looked deeper. Further investigation raised concerns about a ruptured Achilles tendon, a serious injury that requires prompt and specialised care.

Hera was transferred  to surgery, where Dr Tammy took over her care. During the operation, the diagnosis was confirmed: a ruptured Achilles tendon.

The surgical repair involved carefully suturing the torn tendon back together. To protect the repair and allow the tendon to heal properly, a screw was placed across the joint to keep it extended. This immobilisation is a critical part of recovery, as it prevents strain on the healing tendon in the early stages.

What followed was a long but necessary commitment. Hera spent the next 10 weeks in casts and support bandages, with regular checks to ensure everything was healing as planned.

The rehabilitation phase

Surgery was only one part of Hera’s journey. Once the tendon had healed enough, she moved into the rehabilitation phase with Dr Lindy and the rehab team here at AREC.

Her program includes laser therapy, which helps support collagen fibre rebuilding within the tendon, as well as a carefully tailored exercise plan to restore strength and mobility. Much of this work continues at home supported by her owners. By all reports, Hera is progressing beautifully.

A team effort from start to finish

Hera’s story is a great example of what a full-service approach can look like in practice. From emergency assessment, through advanced surgery, and into structured rehabilitation, each team played a vital role in her recovery.

She has truly experienced the full AREC journey, and most importantly, she is well on her way back to a comfortable, active life.

If your pet ever suffers a sudden injury or unexplained lameness, it’s always best to have them assessed early. Prompt care can make all the difference to their outcome.
