We have a staff of more than 100 experienced, qualified staff who work 24/7 to provide holistic medical care. Our purpose-built facilities are equipped to handle the whole client journey from triage, pathology, imaging, surgery, intensive care, pharmacy and recovery. On average we treat 10,000 pets and their humans each year.
In 2004, Dr David Tabrett noticed local vets under pressure from trying to provide medical care for their clients beyond the hours of a general practice clinic. He established the region’s first after-hours emergency animal hospital to provide specialist support to referring vets and pet owners across Newcastle and the Hunter region.
Since opening our doors as Newcastle Animal and Referral Emergency Centre (NAREC) in 2004, and simplifying our name to AREC in 20016, we’ve expanded our services and our premises to occupy the entire building of 4 Lang Rd, Broadmeadow.
Our facility includes a comfortable waiting area, triage and consultation rooms, treatment spaces, isolation bays, a surgical suite/operating theatre, specialised diagnostic imaging, on-site pharmacy, pathology lab and a dedicated staff lounge for our 24/7 on-site team.
AREC is committed to providing a safe work environment for all staff members, clients and patients. Our Team are here to help you and your pet and have the right to work in a safe environment. As such, we operate under a Zero Tolerance policy.
All clients must treat staff members, veterinarians, and other clients with respect, courtesy, and professionalism. Verbal abuse, threats, harassment, intimidation, damage to property or assets or any form of disrespectful behaviour towards the Hospital’s staff or other clients will not be tolerated and may result in refusal of service.
Please respect our team who continue to provide 24/7 care to your pet.
