Vet Student University Placement

We welcome final year university students studying vet science and looking to explore an interest in emergency, critical care, medicine and surgery.
Our referral vets, ER vets and nurses are keen to help vet students grow in their final year before graduating. In addition to assisting in varied complicated medical and surgical cases, vet students are invited to join in any of our in-house training/mentoring sessions that are operating during their rotation with us such as:

  • Weekly ECC Book Club
  • Practicing procedures in Wet Labs
  • CPR training
  • Mortality and Morbidity Rounds, Grand Rounds
  • Ultrasound training
  • Training in Approach to the Emergency Patient

During your time off, we recommend exploring Newcastle’s beautiful beaches and bush walks, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter Valley vineyards, and lots of great cafes and restaurants. We also have a large and collaborative vet community with over 50 clinics and a wide range of experience and expertise to meet!

Emergency & Critical Care Vet Nurse Positions (Casual Roles)

Does the thrill of never knowing exactly what kind of patient is going to walk through the door each night excite you?

You will be working alongside our team of Emergency and Critical Care staff with the view of progressing (with training) into sole charge emergency nursing shifts.

This position would be suitable for nurses with previous experience in this role or those who are looking for a new direction with their nursing.
These positions are ideal for experienced GP nurses looking to develop their skills, or for experienced nurses looking for a change.

You :

  • Preferred minimum 3 years GP experience in a busy practice.
  • Experience in working both sole charge and in a team.
  • Positive outlook.
  • Flexibility to work some Public Holidays, Weekends, Overnights (eg 8 pm until 6 am).
  • Confident in your basic nursing skills.
  • A willingness to learn.
  • Ability to stay calm in a busy environment
  • A drive to experience something new and challenging
  • Certificate IV or equivalent in Veterinary Nursing
  • High quality written and verbal communication skills

Veterinary Nurse – Animal Attendant (Casual Roles)

These positions are ideal for GP nurses who don’t yet have the experience and skills required to be one of our Emergency & Critical Care Nurses – yet are keen to progress your career path in this direction.

You will need to be available for shift work – overnight, weekends & public holidays.

We have a structured Progression Plan implemented to develop our emerging Animal Attendants to become our next Emergency & Critical Care Nurses!

Vet Nurse: Learning & Development Coordinator

This is a newly created role that will require input from the successful candidate. The L&D Nurse Coordinator will oversee, coordinate and deliver the clinical aspects of our Animal Attendant and Nurse progression for both Emergency and Referral services. From the recruitment of the required skill base to the ongoing learning needs of our most experienced nursing team members.

The L&D Coordinator will oversee clinical nursing processes, procedures and policies, to achieve gold standard clinical care and peace of mind. With best clinical practice, our hospital systems will work smoothly, efficiently and maximising capacity. Our nursing team will be aware and engaged in their ongoing learning and career pathways, utilising internal and external resources.

Operational tasks

  • Conduct clinical skills training on shift
  • Coordinate and deliver internal and external nurse training events
  • Oversee nursing staff performing their duties as per job descriptions – including workflow efficiencies
  • Complete & maintain operational reports, assessments and documentation,
  • Proficiently & proactively utilise IT platforms and systems with a capacity to build, improve and update learning modules in Sharepoint and other Microsoft 365 product suite.
  • Liaise with a range of stakeholders including; People & Culture Manager, Vet Director, CEO
  • Plan and execute Annual Training modules according to the need of individuals and the business. This will include annual training & assessments for experienced team members & those returning to work after extended absences such as maternity leave and injury.
  • Demonstrate an ROI of learning & development activities – both through planning and review
  • Assist with the development, implementation and training of nurse training materials and resources
  • Execute this to floor staff through clinical policies, procedures and planned training programs

  • Vet Nurse Diploma in Emergency and Critical Care preferred
  • Experience in group facilitation

The Nursing L&D Coordinator will report to the Practice Manager. You will be expected to work across a flexible schedule, including weekdays, weekends, Public Holidays and evenings up until midnight. (Overnights are not required). This is a full time, salaried role & package in line with 


Customer Service Representative – Casual

We have a position available for our busy 24/7 vet clinic. We are a unique business with opportunity to learn and grow. We are looking for someone to begin asap in a casual capacity that is able to work a wide range of days and times.

Our mission is to provide Peace of Mind for our clients – that is, both pet owners of the Hunter and the local vet clinics to have relief for after hours, emergencies and referral services.  You will be key to ensuring clients receive gold standard customer service during sometimes very stressful times for pet owners.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing incoming calls & patient enquiries, medical records, test results
  • Managing correspondence including mail, email, contributing to newsletters
  • Coordinating appointments and calendar management for veterinarians
  • Billing and financial responsibilities including; banking & reconciliation, processing payments, invoices, receipts & follow up on outstanding accounts
  • General admin may include but is not restricted to; maintain spreadsheets, database management, process and policy reviews, routine and regular tidy and clean of reception and waiting areas, ordering of stationary, document management
  • WHS: Be aware and comply with WHS requirements
  • Contribution of patient stories to our newsletters – which could also be used for our social media
  • Willingness to be one of our social media admins would be an advantage

Selection Criteria

  • A minimum 2 years previous experience working as a receptionist – health, vet or medical would be an advantage although not essential
  • Exceptional telephone manner
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A professional, mature and caring manner
  • High level of computer literacy and typing skills
  • Ability to work with a positive, ‘nothing is too hard’ attitude
  • Outstanding organisational skills with the capacity to work under pressure

Shifts range in times from 6am-3pm or 3pm-midnight including a mix of weekdays and weekends.
Given the nature of our business, flexibility to work a range of these hours is important.

Scheduling and Payroll Co-ordinator  

Are you a roster manager who is a guru problem solver, with excellent communication and people skills?
You manage to work at a fast pace, yet with superior attention to detail?

This role ensures our hard-working shift worker vets and nurses, are supported by having a fully staffed team present on shift every day and night. It is a role that is best suited to someone who enjoys getting to know a large team, and working with them to find the right balance for the business of 24/7 animal patient care.

The right fit for our team would be someone who can think outside the box, is comfortable with change, and can take a creative and positive approach to problem-solving.

You will be responsible for preparing and managing rosters and schedules for our 90+ employees using Kronos WorkForce Ready, and managing a fortnightly payroll using MYOB.

You will report directly to the head of People and Culture in this role, however will also work closely with the Vet Director and Practice Manager.  You will not have any direct line reporting responsibilities. This role will also include some administrative duties to support the AREC Executive team.

Key responsibilities:
Ensuring our around the clock shifts are scheduled, employees are rostered onto shifts, and the Hospital is adequately staffed.
Responsibility for processing online onboarding of new employees
Responsibility for processing and managing the fortnightly payroll run along with general payroll duties
Responsibility for general administrative tasks for the Executive team

Technical skills:
Sound IT skills required.
Ability to use a Scheduling/rostering system essential
Knowledge of and prior experience using Kronos WorkForce Ready Suite and MYOB will be highly regarded
Knowledge of the Animal Care and Vet Services Award is desirable, but not essential
Knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and calculations and ability to produce and manipulate a Microsoft Word document required
Ability to create and maintain appropriate Hospital policies and procedures relevant to the role
Prior experience in a Human or Animal Health environment is highly regarded

Personal Conduct/Performance:
Able to work both autonomously and as part of a larger team
Execute strong communication skills in dealings with Shift Worker employees

Selection Criteria:

  • Prior Scheduling/rostering experience required
  • Prior Payroll experience required

This position is permanent full-time Monday to Friday.  Hours can be negotiated for the right candidate.  No weekend work is required for this role.
