Emergency & Critical Care Veterinarians

Are you the one?

  • A veterinarian with at least 12 months experience (Emergency experience is desirable, but not essential). Training in core skills and mentoring from our Senior vets will be provided.

The Animal Referral and Emergency Centre has been an established After Hours Emergency Centre for the past 15 years. More recently we have expanded to offer day time specialist and referral services (Surgery, Critical Care, Dermatology, Rehab & Physio). We have long term relationships with the general practices in the Newcastle and surrounding areas so it’s important that our medicine, care and communication is of the highest level to enable these relationships to continue into the future.

We have a recently renovated hospital and have achieved the ASAV Hospital of Excellence award. We need someone that can adapt to a constantly changing environment, provide input and feedback and help us grow into the future.

Veterinary Internships

AREC is currently running our 2019 Emergency Internship. We have recruited 2 positions and have decided to open a 3rd and final position!

The position will be rotating through ER, surgery and medicine.

Who are we looking for?

  • Preferably a vet with a minimum of 6 months experience, but new graduates will be considered.
  • A can-do attitude. You need to demonstrate that you understand it is ok to make mistakes and that our greatest learnings often come from these experiences
  • Adaptability to change – we are a hospital still growing and forming and our needs change regularly. Having staff that can embrace change and the opportunities it brings is important to us.
  • A desire to constantly learn and be accountable for your own learning.

Vet Student University Placement

Here at AREC, we welcome University students currently studying vet science degrees and looking to explore an interest in Emergency and Crititcal Care for small animals. We are currently only accepting vet student applications for final year students in 2021. (2020 is now fully booked)

These can either be arranged through your university placement coordinator, or you are welcome to apply independently for a placement, by entering your details via the below form..

Emergency & Critical Care Veterinarian – Team Leader

AREC Team leaders are expected to be permanent employees. Casual employees may apply but will be expected to transition to full or part time permanent employment on successful appointment to a TL role.  Due to the nature of the role, Team Leaders are required to work a minimum of 50 hours per fortnight.  Team leader hours are in addition to this.

You;

  • Have all the qualities listed above in the position for our Emergency and Critical Care Veterinarians.
  • Have a desire to lead and show leadership by example
  • Have a desire to develop people and have the ability to provide constant feedback to improve work performance and efficiency

Also:

  • As part of the role, Team Leaders are expected to participate in formal Team Leader training

Emergency & Critical Care Veterinary Nurses

These positions are ideal for experienced GP nurses looking to develop their skills, or for experienced nurses looking for a change.

You will be working alongside our team of Emergency and Critical Care staff with the view of progressing with training into sole charge emergency nursing shifts.  This position would be suitable for nurses with previous experience in this role or those who are looking for a new direction with their nursing.

You :

  • Minimum 3 years GP experience in a busy practice.
  • Experience in working both sole charge and in a team.
  • Positive outlook.
  • Flexibility to work some Public Holidays, Weekends, Nightshift.
  • Confident in your basic nursing skills.
  • A willingness to learn.
  • Ability to stay calm in a busy environment
  • A drive to experience something new and challenging
  • Certificate IV or equivalent in Veterinary Nursing
  • High quality written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise and multi-task

About the job:

  • Nursing;
    • intravenous catheter placement, intravenous blood samples, assisting with radiographs, bandaging, monitoring anaesthetics.
    • Ensure appropriate diagnostics are performed and results recorded and communicated
    • Advanced nursing techniques such as ventilator care
    • Communicate patient progress to staff, clients and referral hospitals

Referral Nurse

Referral nurses work alongside our referral teams in Surgery and ECC as well as supporting our ER staff. This position is suitable for experienced nurses as well as those looking for a new direction and would like to dip their toes in the referral space.  Training will be provided by experienced nurses working in this role.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3-5 years GP experience in a busy practice.
  • Experience in working both sole charge and in a team.
  • Sound knowledge of general anaesthesia
  • General knowledge of surgical patient preparation
  • General knowledge of surgical instrument preparation
  • Positive outlook.
  • Confident in your nursing skills.
  • A willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to stay calm in a busy environment
  • A drive to experience something new and challenging

Veterinary Nurse – Animal Attendant

These positions are ideal for GP nurses who don’t yet have the experience and skills required to be one of our Emergency & Critical Care Nurses – yet are keen to progress your career path in this direction.

You will need to be available for shift work – overnight, weekends & Public Holidays.

About the job:

  • Animal Attending (entry level)
    • Ensure hospital workflow is efficient by maintaining hospital hygiene and floor stock levels
    • Patient care – walking, feeding, grooming, bathing and cage care of inpatients
    • Assisting Nurses and Vets with animal handling and procedures such as IV placement, blood draws, IV fluids set up, X-rays and Ultrasounds
    • Assisting with TPR duties under the supervision and as directed by Nurses
    • Surgery assistance (set up and maintenance of Surgical areas)
    • Reception Duties
    • Handle patients in line with our “Low Stress Handling” Techniques

  • This position is for shift workers – overnights, weekends and Public Holidays
  • Start date; we are in need of casual AA’s from November 2019
  • Casual positions require a minimum commitment of 2 shifts per month
