Are you a passionate, Cert IV qualified veterinary nurse eager to step into the world of emergency and critical care? AREC is now accepting applications for the 2025 Vet Nurse Internship Program, designed for those with limited experience who are ready to build a solid foundation in this challenging and rewarding field. 

 

About the Program

Our 12-month internship is tailored to support and develop veterinary nurses who are new to emergency and critical care. This program is a blend of hands-on experience and structured learning, aimed at equipping you with the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to become a fully-fledged ECC veterinary nurse.

What You’ll Do

As a Vet Nurse Intern, you’ll work on a structured schedule combining various shifts to build a robust skill set:

  • Junior Nurse/Animal Attendant Shifts: 2 shifts per week
  • General Practice Shifts: 1 shift per week, rotating through 4 partnered general practice clinics in the Newcastle/Hunter region every 3 months (12 weeks in each clinic)
  • Emergency Room Training: 4 shadowing shifts per month with experienced AREC nurses
  • Total Commitment: A minimum of 120 hours per 4-week rotation, including day, overnight, weekend and some public holiday shifts.

 

 

Empowering Growth Through Our Comprehensive Vet Nurse Internship

As part of your vet nurse internship, you will acquire skills/qualifications for the following:

  • RECOVER CPR
  • Fear Free Certification
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • AREC Animal Attendant Progression Plan
  • Shadowing alongside AREC nurses
  • Reception Training

You will also have the potential to complete the following additional training:

  • First Aid (human)
  • Fire Warden Training
  • Additional responsibilities & learning of hospital management – (e.g., management of blood machines, blood donation program, etc.)

Your Qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Vet Nursing (essential)
