OUR NEW INTERNAL MEDICINE SERVICE
Our Internal Medicine service provides advanced investigation, diagnosis and treatment for pets with complex, chronic or difficult-to-diagnose medical conditions.
Working closely with referring veterinarians, our Internal Medicine team delivers comprehensive care for patients requiring specialist expertise, advanced diagnostics and ongoing disease management.
We are committed to providing timely communication, collaborative case management and the highest standard of patient care throughout every stage of the referral process.
CONDITIONS WE COMMONLY MANAGE
Our Internal Medicine service investigates and treats a wide range of conditions, including:
- Gastrointestinal disease such as chronic vomiting, diarrhoea and pancreatitis
- Liver and gallbladder disorders such as hepatitis, elevated liver enzymes and gallbladder disease
- Kidney and urinary tract disease such as chronic kidney disease, urinary tract infections and bladder stones
- Endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism and hypoadrenocorticism
- Immune-mediated diseases such as immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia, immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and polyarthritis
- Respiratory conditions such as chronic cough, feline asthma and pneumonia
- Infectious diseases such as tick-borne diseases, leptospirosis and feline infectious peritonitis
- Haematological disorders such as anaemia, clotting disorders and platelet abnormalities
- Complex or persistent medical cases such as recurrent infections, ongoing gastrointestinal signs and poor response to treatment
- Unexplained weight loss, fever or chronic illness such as weight loss despite a normal appetite, fever of unknown origin and chronic lethargy

Our team has access to advanced diagnostic tools to assist in reaching an accurate diagnosis and developing an effective treatment plan.
These may include:
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Endoscopy
- Advanced blood and urine testing
- Cytology and tissue sampling
- Imaging (incl CT) and specialist interpretation
- Comprehensive medical investigations
Following diagnosis, we work closely with pet owners and referring veterinarians to develop individualised treatment and management plans tailored to each patient’s needs.

Patients can be referred to our Internal Medicine Service by their usual veterinarian.
We maintain close communication with referring clinics and provide detailed reports and recommendations following consultations and investigations.

With extensive experience in small animal internal medicine, Dr Valls Sanchez has a strong interest in diagnosing and managing complex medical conditions. He is committed to evidence-based care, clear communication and working closely with referring veterinarians to deliver tailored treatment plans and the best possible outcomes for patients and their families.
Dr Ferran Valls Sanchez joins AREC in July 2026 as our Internal Medicine Specialist and will begin seeing referral patients from early August.
